Matt Dixon's Economic Portfolio

Economic Writings

Who Am I?

My name is Matt Dixon and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Akron. My major is economics and I have a minor in Business Management for Non-business Majors. Economics and business have been a huge part of what defines me. When I was born, in 1988, my father started a telecommunications business that eventually led its industry throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Much of my knowledge and experience about business come from his guidance and wisdom. Economics has always been one of my natural interests; to understand the reasoning and causes behind interest rates, certain legislation, poverty, wealth, and how people behave when faced with incentives is fascinating, not only because it is important to know as a citizen and for my financial sake, but also because so many people do not know it.

Other than economics and business, hockey is what also defines me. I have been playing for over 15 years, it has taken me to many states, all over the country; I lived in Canada because of it and I've met many great people through hockey. I decided to stop playing after one season with the Akron Zips team when I was 21 years old, but I am still involved with the game through coaching. Since I was 19 I coached the Jackson High School Hockey team and I was recently hired on as the assistant coach to the Akron Zips hockey team for the 2012-2013 season. Playing was amazing and it taught me to be a teammate, but coaching has taught me to be a role model and both will help me as I move forward in life.

My Educational Objectives

As a first generation college attendee, first and foremost, I want to graduate school with a degree in economics and help lead the way for future generations in my family to have the courage to attend college. Secondly, I want to graduate with honors and as of right now, I am on the track to accomplishing that. Thirdly, I do not know whether I want to attend graduate school. That truly depends on the opportunities I have as I approach graduation. Last, but not least, I will always further my education; it is a commitment I made to myself when I graduated high school and went into the workforce. In school, or not, it is imperative to improve, especially for anyone who aspires to excel.

 My Career Objectives

My goal, once I graduate college is not to simply find a job and work in it for 40 years and then retire. Within 5 years I want to have experience in the financial sector of the economy. Within 10 years I want to own my own business. Within 15 years I want have a business that can operate without me, so I can move onward to new ventures.
